Let me guess, your kitten is not using the litter box and it’s driving you crazy. If so continue to read and you will learn some real helpful tips.

Litter training kittens is not because the kitten does not like you, it’s because you are not kitten educated and it really makes you and your cat frustrated. Litter training kittens can become a little frustrating but don’t worry here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. First and foremost you need to understand that a kitten learns how to use the litter when its mother teaches it how to do so. So now the mother kitten is not around, so that leaves you to teach your kitten how to train your kitten

2. Never place your litter box in the bathroom unless you have nowhere else to place it. Also do not place your kittens litter box in any busy place at your home, it does nothing but makes your cat feel uncomfortable.

3. Use great litter! If this is not new to you then you have nothing to worry about it, for those who use really dusty cheap litter, stop it now. It does nothing but hurts your cats lungs and the texture does not feel great your kitten.

4. Do not use scented litter! Yeah I know it smells good to you but you are not the one that has to use that area to go potty. Scented litter turns your kitten away from it because they want to smell themselves in there litter. It complicates the whole going to potty for the cat.

5. Empty the litter box completely once a month at least. This by itself will make litter training kittens much easier. Just dump the litter in a handy trash bag. Do not use any type of strong home cleaners to clean your kittens litter box.

6. Use a cat spray! Most cat owners don’t really know that there are sprays on the market that help you attract your cat to there litter box, check your local pet store and see which one will be best for you.

The most difficult part of solving inappropriate elimination problems is figuring out the cause.

Unfortunately, cats are extremely sensitive to change - and if your cat had been consistently eliminating in the litter box and then suddenly stopped, something has changed whether you are aware of it or not.

So the objective is to figure out what’s changed.

Here are a couple of things to think about:

The most important thing to consider when trying to figure out what caused the house soiling problem is: Approximately when did this behavior start?

2nd most important: Are you certain it’s not a health issue such as an Urinary Tract Infection? (The #1 symptom of an UTI is sudden litter box avoidance)

Here are a few other questions to consider that will help you pinpoint the cause:

• Did anything at all change near the time when the behavior started? (Try to think of everything, no matter how miniscule it seems)
• Have you recently moved to a new house?
• Did you recently introduce a new cat/dog/ferret/roommate into your home?
• Have any of the litter boxes been moved? (Maybe he or she tends to routinely use one certain box and that particular one was moved)
• Did you rearrange or add any new furniture to your house?
• Are you 100% sure this cat is the one not using the box?
• Are any of your cats not getting along?

Inter-cat tension is actually a lot harder to spot than most owners realize. Your cats may not be physically fighting with each other, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are getting along. One cat may even be "silently" intimidating another, but the owner isn’t aware of it.

If you’re sure you know which cat isn’t using the litter box, and you know which litter box that cat typically uses, keep an eye out to see if any of your other cats are spending extra time "hanging out" near that box.

If you have any covered litter boxes, pay close attention to any cats that tend to sit on top of the litter box.

One surefire method of retraining a stubborn cat is to put the cat in a nearly empty room for a day or two, with only a few toys, a scratching post, water, a bed and a litter box.

Use this technique to house train your cat and don’t allow free access to the rest of the house until the cat is completely retrained and no longer eliminates outside of the litter box.

Some people are shocked when they realize just how many things can cause a house soiling problem. What they don’t realize is that a cat’s bathroom habits are actually a very complex and delicate piece of a cat’s life, and it can be easily disturbed.

Many people think that owning a cat is so much fun, you get to have an animal that loves you so much and you won’t even have to get yourself dirty when it comes to the cute kitty’s potty needs….boy, oh boy, are you in for a surprise?!

The phrase, "house cats train themselves" is not true. It is true that it is in their instincts to go to the bathroom in a spot that is sandy or soft so that they can cover their mess; that soft place might be your living room rug or the laundry basket just as much as it could be their litter box…in their eyes that is; it might take a lot of training and a lot of patience to get your furry little friend to go where he is supposed to…meaning the litter box.

First, get a litter box that is big enough for the cat, or kitten; something that he will be able to get into and out of easily. It needs to be big enough so that he can move around and get comfortable without getting lost in the process.
Put a couple of inches of cat litter in the box.

Note: do not use wood shavings, the little blue crystals (even if they are pretty), and try to avoid the all natural stuff because they makes the cleaning up a lot more difficult then it should be…although most people do not recommend this, get the litter that clumps real well ( this is usually the cheaper stuff). Now before you write me off as a freak just listen…put a couple of inches of litter into the litter box and get a little bag of lava rocks (you can find them at Wal-Mart), set the bag next to the litter box and you will have no problems with smell. Of course other people have different ways of dealing with the smell, this is what I use, and it works.

Now that you have the litter box all ready, it is time to place it somewhere that the cat will like and that means a place that is quiet and out of the way of everyday traffic ( I use a extra little bathroom that nobody uses); do not place the litter box around any bags of dry cat food that you might have because a cat is not going to go to the bathroom in the same place that his food is kept…cats are clean animals and they will not dirty their food or their bed.

The problem that you have to face now is the one of getting your cat to start using the litter box; that can be tricky especially if you are dealing with a small kitten that has just been taken away from his mother.

Kittens are sometimes taken away from their mommas too soon, which means that they do not have a role model to follow and they do not have anybody to show them what to do and how to do it; because of this, they need you to be there for them and to have a lot of patience with them because it is usually the little ones that have the most problems in learning to use the litter box…they can go for more then a month sometimes without using the litter box, it just takes that long.

Tip: Try using vinegar and some nice smelling oil to get the stain and the smell out of the carpet in places that your little friend has had accidents.

After you have gotten your cat to use the litter box regularly…if you want, you can even get him to start using the toilet, something that will save you a lot of money and effort. Just move the litter box a couple inches at a time (maybe every other week or so) until you have the litter box up on top of the toilet (seat down) let the cat get used to it, then there is a special box that you can hook on to the inside of the toilet, when your cat has gotten used to that and is using it without any problems then just remove the litter box.

If your cat starts having accidents then you know that you have moved too fast… and you will need to start from the beginning…
